Introduction

These 10 poems are written on the theme of ” my growth in English “. I depicted a story from the story of a junior high school student when I got to touch English firmly till the present of a college student whose English became familiar. I moved from a world with little English to a world surrounded by English. I have had various experiences since I met English. In this time I wrote such memories of English and me in poetry, but from there various things came to be seen.

Finding①

First, I felt “any event in my life is impressive”. My memories recorded to this poetry collection. This memories is from my turning point such as entrance examination, beginning of living by myself, etc to my trivial event such as story of my hobby. I could make any scene a story of an impressive poem. I think that this is not my power is strong, because “I draw the scene in poetry”. This does not mean that my strength is strong. “Because I express the scene with poetry” I think. Big events for me for example, entrance examinations and the beginning of new life, become impressive in whatever form. However, watching your own hobbies and trivial events of daily life from a unique point of view, and passing poetic expressions will naturally create impressive scenes.

Finding②

Second, I think that “any scene in my life will be my strength”. By watching overseas movies, I was able to nurture my creativity while learning English. New life gave me a stimulation to my action power and let me learn the sense of the mission of living by myself. I learn from any trivial things and I feel that all the events are making me right now.

Finding③

Finally, I could rethink my own behavior through these poems. It is said that poetic expressions can remind readers of my thoughts and memories or superimpose it on the memories of readers. I felt I was watching that from the perspective of a third party by seeing my memory through poetic expressions.

Conclusion of me with English

English and my involvement are included in all verses as an indispensable element of this poem. It is no exaggeration to say that English has changed my life. Now I am enrolled in Gunma University. I have increased interaction with people. This is all thanks to my study of English. And English is effective even after graduating from university in the future. English is just the second language I have learned for the first time. I thought that I could get Insight that could not be obtained with Japanese learning alone through English learning. I felt a certain happiness in English learning. That is to learn the importance of effort. I was able to realize that I can overcome my weakness. I had never done such a great experience so far, so I was able to create self-confidence from that.

Since I met English now like this, I think if I will grow up with English for a while. I want to live while feeling the importance of learning English from now on.

 

Explanation of poetry①

・1st poetry : First impression of English

This poem is a story when I was a junior high school student. I also mentioned “theme”, but I started studying English from junior high school students.

This is a story in class. It is a moment located at the beginning of two of “me and English”. I don’t like English at that time. I could not understand grammar and I could not memorize words. I had luckily toppled the test of that subject. English was an area unknown to me. This poem is a work that drew me when I am far away from English.

 

・2nd poetry : It is cloudy

This poem is a story when I was a high school student. I managed to break through my high school exam and managed to enter high school. However, my English ability has not changed since I was a junior high school student.

This poem is a work that wrote what I felt when I was taught class and done my exercises when I was a sophomore in high school. English exams existed in the entrance examination of the university, so I had to study it. I did not know where to start studying and the grades did not grow. Regarding that, I was anxious.

 

・3rd poetry : Getting over

This poem is a story when I was a third-year high school student.

The moment will guide my English’s growth. I became able to concentrate on my studies by retiring club activities. I instantaneously settled on my study of English hard. However, I did not go on a regular basis and needed a lot of effort. In order to raise my English ability, I asked my friends to cooperate and I got teaching from my teacher. I am going to have shorten a distance with English little by little. It is a poem that depicts my strong will and decision.

 

・4th poetry : A little more

This poem is a story when I was a third-year high school student, and after I decided to study English intensely. This poem is the continuation of the third poem.

It was not easy to learn English and raise your ability. Sometimes I was scolded by my teacher and sometimes I shed tears because it was bitter. However, I felt that I gradually changed in the course of doing so. Because I had this hard work, I think that I am now. This poem depicts my struggle for about 10 months from quitting club activity to examination.

 

・5th poetry : Overcoming

This poem is a story fall in 2016 when I am a high school third grader. With the efforts from the summer, my English ability has been growing dramatically. If I noticed it, I was able to take 70% points in my English test. I was able to understand any difficult words, past participle and hypothesis and read long sentence. Having this opportunity, I got my own hope in my life.

This poem states happy things for me, but happiness is not being strongly expressed because I had not completed final object that pass college entrance examination.

 

・6th poetry : Entrance exam

This poem is a story of February,2017. It was a day of admission test day. There were hundreds of people in the largest lecture hall of the university. Everyone was studying for the exam. This space was quiet. In this way the atmosphere was abnormal. I still remember that.

This poem depicts the tension just before the exam begins. In fact, I was very nervous. However, I’ve had confidence as I have worked so far.

I am pleased if my feelings that tasted the moment of tension and excitement are transmitted to everyone.

 

7th poetry : Dividing fate

This poem is a story of March 3rd,2017. It was a day of announcement of acceptance of university entrance. I clearly remember the day as well as on the day of admission exam. Since the announcement of acceptance was made on the internet, I waited in front of the personal computer in my home. When I understood that I passed, I immediately reported to my parents and school. I was more excited at that time. This scene is never a goal, but it was the moment when I achieved one big goal. This day is myself and English, and a turning point of my life.

Hi! I’m Kosuke Sasajima. I’m a university student of Gunma university. I was born in Toyama and lived in there. After graduating from high school, I came to Gunma for university admission. I am majoring in social informatics. In this academic field, students learn various things such as society, law, economy, mass media. I am interested in mass media, so I will study about it.

It was during my kindergarten when I met English. I began studying it since I was a junior high school student. I have studied various things but I felt that English is a difficult subject among them.

 

・Theme

 

The theme of this book is “my growth in English”. I was studying English since junior high school students but I did not like it much. This is a work that depicts my English ability growth from junior high school students to college students.

Also, I like creation and imagination. Creation and imagination develop the power of human beings. This time, I tried the first time to write poetry in English. Through this time I felt having fun writing poetry Although I’m new to it for the first time, I’d like you to enjoy the world of poetry drawn by me.

I became a college student.

There is a new life and new English.

New teacher, a new word, a tough class.

 

That life is pleasant.

I can meet lots of new things like adventure.

I like movie.

I like comedy, suspense, horror and animation.

I enjoy movies with Japanese subtitles and English subtitles.

There is a difference in each and there is pleasure.

movies are a place to have fun while learning.

 

Movies learn languages and enrich creativity.

Moveis are dream world.

Movies are magic.

I trained my English power.

There were times when I trained with my friends.

10 memories of my English learning in detail

・When I was a junior high school student, I disliked English.

I could not understand English.“What is English grammar? What is “kakobunshi”? I don’t know this word!”I said. I fortunately overcome high school entrance exam.

・I hated English till the second year of high school.

I was able to speak English better than before. but, I disliked English. I got worse point in English test every time, so I was always angered by my teacher.

・When I was in high school three years, I started studying from the beginning for studying for exams.

After retired drama club that I belonged to, I started studying for college entrance exam.  At first, I struggled. So, I studied foundation. If I had things that I do not know, I went to teacher for hearing things.

・It was able to overcome brilliantly.

I increased grade because I studied English so hard. I got good point in trial test. After, English became my best subject.

・I passed the entrance examination of the university in English subjects.

The Gunma university’s entrance exam was two subjects that English and mathematics. And we could elect either subject. I immediately elected English exam. This exam is so difficult. I didn’t have confidence. But, I passed entrance examination!

・When I was in high school, I enjoyed English movie.

I like movie. I saw “six sense”,” The Shawshank Redemption” and more. I enjoyed English sound by Japanese writing, and enjoyed Japanese sound by English writing too. I think that movie is tool that watching for enjoying and studying language.

・Since I became a college student, I have not studied English much.

Before passed entrance examination, I studied English only. But I had stopped studying since I become university student. Because I must study many subject. I regretted my action.

・I read biographies written in English at a university.

University student read many English book(“Tadoku”). I read many biographies that music, technology, adventurer, and more. Reading biographies in English is new experience for me.

・I became more opportunities to use English after I became a college student.

I had stopped studying English, but Recently, I study English so hard. because I attend English classes three times a week. These classes is different from each, so I must prepare each classes.

・My teacher said “language is forever tool”.

My English teacher said so. ”expression will change to various form in future. but, language expression don’t change. it is greatest communication tool because many people use.”. Things that she taught me made my mind change. After, I become to study so hard.

Poem features written in second language

I read “Poetry writing to express love in that and in English : A second language (L2) writing perspective(Chamcharatsri , P. B. ,2013)”. This article describes what happens when a Thai student writes a poem in Thai and English. The feature of poetry making in the second language became clear. First , rhyming in poetry is a good way of expression. “Rhyming” is to end the sentence with the same sound at the end. For example, happy, sadly, country, and more. Rhyming is an expression that was often seen in Japanese “Waka” and Chinese poetry since ancient times. Even today, we are rhyming even in Japanese songs and raps. To say one person, rhyming can create a romantic scene. Of course, it helps to create not only romantic but also various scenes.

Up to the previous blog, I discussed the poetry that used the second language, but which languages would be more useful to write in ? Thai student Em says that it is better to write poetry in the second language (English) than the mother tongue (Thai language). He says Thai itself is not very romantic. However, another person says that Thai has a mind full of things. It is suitable for expressing thanks and dear friends to people in poetry. In this way, Depending on the language used for poetry, the perception of poetry varies from person to person. Even poems of the same content may differ depending on the language used. I felt it necessary to look back a little more about the interesting language.
